What Is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide (brand name Mounjaro) is a once-weekly injectable medication that activates two hormone receptors: GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). This dual action makes it the most effective injectable weight-loss treatment currently available.

In the SURMOUNT-1 clinical trial (NEJM, 2022), patients taking 15mg weekly achieved average weight loss of 20.9% over 72 weeks. Some participants lost more than 25%. It also significantly improves blood glucose, making it particularly effective in type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.

Dosing

How Tirzepatide Is Started

Dose escalation schedule:

  • • Weeks 1-4: 2.5mg once weekly
  • • Weeks 5-8: 5mg once weekly
  • • Weeks 9-12: 7.5mg once weekly
  • • Weeks 13-16: 10mg once weekly
  • • Maintenance: 12.5mg or 15mg once weekly
