The Weight Loss Injections We Prescribe

Wegovy
Semaglutide 2.4 mg · Weekly injection

Wegovy is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection containing semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Available in Ireland since early 2025.

  • Average weight loss: 12–17% of body weight
  • Licensed for obesity (BMI ≥30) and overweight (BMI ≥27) with comorbidity
  • Reduces cardiovascular events in high-risk patients
  • Gradual dose escalation over 16 weeks to minimise side effects
Mounjaro
Tirzepatide · Weekly injection

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist. Available in Ireland since February 2025 and producing the largest weight loss of any approved medication.

  • Average weight loss: 15–22% of body weight in clinical trials
  • Currently licensed for type 2 diabetes; widely prescribed off-label for weight management
  • Particularly effective in patients with insulin resistance and PCOS
  • Gradual dose escalation; Dr Kazmi adjusts based on individual response
Ozempic
Semaglutide 0.5–2 mg · Weekly injection

Ozempic is the diabetes-licensed version of semaglutide, used at lower doses primarily for blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. The same active ingredient as Wegovy at a lower dose.

  • Licensed for type 2 diabetes in Ireland
  • Significant weight loss effect (8–14% body weight) as a secondary benefit
  • Prescribed when diabetes management and weight reduction are both goals
  • Dr Kazmi determines whether Ozempic or Wegovy is appropriate for each patient

Why See a Consultant Endocrinologist?

Many online weight loss services prescribe GLP-1 medications after a brief questionnaire. Dr Kazmi is a Consultant Endocrinologist — a specialist in the hormonal and metabolic conditions that drive obesity. This matters.

Undiagnosed conditions

Many patients have unrecognised thyroid disease, adrenal dysfunction, PCOS or insulin resistance that affect their response to weight loss medication. Dr Kazmi identifies and treats these first.

Correct drug selection

Not every patient should be on the same medication. Tirzepatide may be more appropriate for PCOS and insulin resistance; semaglutide for cardiovascular risk reduction. The choice matters.

Safe dose titration

Both Wegovy and Mounjaro require careful dose escalation. Dr Kazmi monitors side effects, adjusts doses and escalates safely — reducing the 40% abandonment rate seen in unsupervised patients.

Long-term plan

Weight loss injections are tools, not cures. Dr Kazmi builds a comprehensive plan including dietary guidance, monitoring, and a long-term strategy — not just a prescription.

Patient Questions — Wegovy & Mounjaro in Ireland

Yes. Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg) became available in Ireland in early 2025 and is licensed by the HPRA for chronic weight management in adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or overweight (BMI ≥27) with a weight-related condition. It must be prescribed by a doctor following full clinical assessment.
Yes. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) became available in Ireland in February 2025, licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is also widely prescribed for weight management in patients without diabetes where clinically appropriate. Dr Kazmi assesses each patient individually before prescribing.
No GP referral is required. You can self-refer directly to our Naas Clinic. Call 089 656 7597 or book online. Dr Kazmi will complete a full clinical assessment before any prescription is issued.
Wegovy contains semaglutide, which acts on GLP-1 receptors. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors (a dual mechanism). Clinical trials show tirzepatide typically produces greater weight loss (15–22%) compared to semaglutide (12–17%). The choice between them depends on your medical history, existing conditions, and treatment goals.
The initial consultation is €230. Neither Wegovy nor Mounjaro is currently reimbursed under the GMS or Drug Payment Scheme in Ireland. Approximate monthly medication costs: Wegovy €200–320, Mounjaro €280–450 (dose-dependent). Follow-up consultations are €150. Dr Kazmi advises on the most cost-effective option for your situation.
Some online services prescribe GLP-1 medications after a brief online questionnaire. While this is technically possible, it bypasses the clinical assessment that identifies whether an underlying endocrine condition is contributing to your weight — conditions like thyroid disease, PCOS, adrenal problems or insulin resistance. An in-person assessment by a Consultant Endocrinologist ensures the correct diagnosis and the most appropriate treatment.

Important: Semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) are prescription-only medicines in Ireland. They are not available without a prescription and can only be prescribed following a full clinical assessment by a registered medical practitioner. This page provides general patient information and does not constitute medical advice. Suitability, dosing and monitoring must be determined on an individual basis by your treating physician. If you have concerns about your health, please consult your GP or a qualified medical specialist.
